Outdoor wall sconce
Lighting a facade, a terrace or a path calls for sconces able to take on damp, frost and swings in temperature. Materials and durability
Outdoors, the material counts for more than the decoration. Die-cast aluminium, light and barely sensitive to corrosion, equips most contemporary models. Stainless steel behaves better by the sea. Brass and copper, for their part, take on a patina season after season and turn grey or green depending on exposure to wind and rain.
The finish weighs as much as the metal. Oven-baked epoxy paint gives lasting protection to the edges, where a simple lacquer ends up flaking. Tempered glass diffusers take thermal shock better than plastic, which yellows under ultraviolet light. Silicone seals and stainless fixings limit water ingress at the mounting points.
Protection ratings and light output
The IP rating sums up resistance to dust and water. IP44 is enough under a well-sheltered canopy; IP54, or even IP65, is needed on a wall exposed to driving rain or to the spray of a wash-down. The first digit covers solid bodies, the second liquids.
As for output, a warm white around 3,000 K stays readable without hardening the colour of renders and timber. Narrow beams draw crisp cones on a facade, while wide diffusers cover a circulation area. Placement around the house
Either side of a front door, two symmetrical sconces set at face height frame the entrance and make the lock visible. On a narrow threshold, a single model offset above the lintel produces the same effect without overloading the wall.
Along a path, one point of light every three to four metres is enough to guide the step. On a terrace, grazing light aimed downwards avoids dazzling seated guests. For an outdoor staircase, the logic stays the one set out in our staircase lighting: light the tread, never the eye.

Two cones of light, one upwards and one downwards, give structure to a stretch of facade. The graphic effect obtained depends on the texture of the wall: crisp on a smooth render, softer on stone. This format lines up readily with the openings.
Dark shades

Matt black disappears against dark cladding and, conversely, stands out on a pale wall. It hides rain marks well and pairs with anthracite aluminium joinery, in the same family as our black wall sconces.
Compact formats
Small outdoor wall sconce for an entrance
Cube, half-sphere or flat backplate: these discreet models suit small surfaces, between a door and a meter box. Their reach is short, which makes them suited to way-marking rather than to general lighting.
Check the drilling height and the cable entry provided before fixing the backplate to the wall.
