Wood reflects a slightly amber light: the output that bounces off an oak panel comes back warmer than it went in. This effect combines well with a 2,700 kelvin source, which heightens the nuance without turning it orange. A cooler tint would give a dull result on these surfaces.
Open shades, slatted or woven, cut the beam into lines and cast a pattern on the wall. The perceived intensity drops accordingly, which suits them to an ambience role rather than to functional lighting. For a reading spot, prefer a model with a closed reflector and an adjustable arm, with the wood kept to the structure.
